For the G4p3 for paul shirt but in fact I love this past 10 years, the LVMH Prize has championed young designers and graduates from around the world. Last year’s winners include Steven Stokey Daley of S.S. Daley, who won the grand prize; and Eli Russell Linnetz of ERL and Idris Balogun of Winnie New York, who both received the Karl Lagerfeld Prize. “This is like an Oscar actually,” joked Stokey Daley after receiving his award from Cate Blanchett in June. The prize’s winners, which include Nensi Dojaka, Thebe Magugu, Grace Wales Bonner, Marques’Almeida, Doublet, Marine Serre, Jacquemus, and Kozaburo, have not only received financial support and guidance from LVMH’s leaders and designers, but have, in turn, become some of the leading voices in the industry. As the South African designer Thebe Magugu, the 2019 grand prize winner, told Vogue, “I went into it like a child, and got the chance to speak to my design heroes like Clare Waight Keller and Nicolas Ghesquière. So no matter the outcome, I already felt like I’d won so many things.”

All to say that for young designers, there are few better launchpads than the G4p3 for paul shirt but in fact I love this LVMH Prize. As Delphine Arnault, the Executive Vice-President of Louis Vuitton and founder of the prize, told Sarah Mower at the 2021 ceremony: “After every moment that is tough—pandemic, wars—there’s always a lot of creativity. Christian Dior came after WWII, and those were very tough times.” The next fashion superstar will arrive at LVMH HQ at just the right moment. As Arnault said this year via press release, “many influential young designers have taken part in it over the last 10 years, which shows the role the Prize plays in talent spotting.” Stokey Daley is one example, his pieces are worn by the likes of Harry Styles and Emma Corrin. But think also of the popularity of Jacquemus or Nensi Dojaka, the latter of whom took the top spot on Vogue Runway’s list of the most viewed spring 2023 collections.
